Daniel Schwartz had 30 days to hunt an Ohio farm. A wind change forced a new stand, and opening day ended with a 180-inch buck.

The Wind Flipped. He Moved His Stand And Tagged A 180-Inch Buck.

Daniel Schwartz had permission to bowhunt a central Ohio farm for only 30 days. He already knew which buck he wanted, an older deer he called Timer, and trail-camera history had shown where the buck liked to leave its bedding area and enter a soybean field.

His original lock-on was built around a northwest wind. Then the opening-day forecast shifted southwest. Instead of hoping the first setup would somehow work, Schwartz went back in and prepared another stand for the wind he was actually going to hunt. That adjustment put him in the right tree when Timer stepped into the beans. Let’s dive in.

The Buck 𐂂

180 INCHES 32 YARD SHOT 30 DAYS ACCESS

Schwartz had good camera history on Timer and figured the buck was about 6 years old. He had only a 30-day window to hunt the property, which is where the name came from. The plan for opening day was simple: sit between the buck’s bedding area and the soybeans it was using to feed.

The first stand on the field edge was set for a northwest wind. As Sept. 26 got closer, the forecast changed to southwest. Schwartz hung another stand that fit the new wind instead of trying to make the old one work. Late that afternoon, he and cameraman Dylon Gandee used electric bikes for a quiet approach, parked in cover, and climbed in.

Around 7 p.m., Timer stepped from the bedding side and entered the field. Schwartz took a 32-yard shot that hit a touch high, but the arrow passed through. At the timber edge they found only a faint blood trail, so they backed out and returned at 9 p.m. Timer had gone about 30 yards into the woods. The 16-point rack carried a 22-inch inside spread and scored 180 inches.

𐂂 Field Fact

Ohio’s 2026-27 statewide deer archery season opened Sept. 26 and runs through Feb. 7, 2027\. Ohio allows only one antlered deer during the season, regardless of where or how it is taken.

The Woodsman’s Edge 𐂂

The wind forecast is a stand-location decision.

Schwartz did not ask the original stand to survive the wrong wind. When the forecast changed, he changed the setup before opening day.

𐂂 Build more than one wind plan. If a target buck has a repeatable bed-to-feed route, identify where you can hunt it on the winds you are most likely to get instead of relying on one tree.

𐂂 Treat access as part of the wind plan. Your stand can be perfect and still fail if your walk in sends scent through the bedding cover or across the trail you expect the buck to use.

𐂂 Do not force the hunt because your calendar is tight. Thirty days of access created pressure, but Schwartz still changed stands and later backed out of a faint blood trail instead of rushing either decision.

Dress For The Sit The Wind Gives You

A wind change can move you to a different tree, a different walk in, and a longer sit than you planned. I want layers that stay quiet and comfortable without making the setup complicated. Kings Camo is the kind of practical system I look at when the forecast starts changing the hunt.

The Field Call 𐂂

Would You Move The Stand?

Opening day is coming. Your stand is perfect for a northwest wind, but the forecast flips southwest.

Your target buck is still using the same bedding-to-bean route, and you have only 30 days of permission on the property.

What’s your move?

Dead Down Wind Wind Detector

$3.99

*Dale’s note:* This whole hunt turned on a wind change. A simple wind bottle is cheap insurance before you climb. Dead Down Wind’s detector uses a fine, unscented powder that gives you a visible read on subtle air movement and fits easily in a pocket. Check the wind at the truck, on the walk in, and again from the tree. Forecast direction and actual ground-level wind are not always the same thing.

The Last Word 𐂂

Schwartz had only 30 days on the farm, but the clock did not make the decisions for him.

When the forecast changed, he hung a stand for the southwest wind instead of hunting the northwest setup because it was already there. After the shot, a pass-through and faint blood still did not convince him to rush into the timber. He backed out and came back later.

Timer scored 180 inches. The useful part of the story is smaller: good plans change when the conditions do.

Do you keep backup stands for different winds, or move your setup only when the forecast forces you to? Reply and tell me.

Hunt the wind you have.
