Sal Ahrens shot an enormous Minnesota whitetail near Sauk Centre in 1956\. Years later, the rack was whispered about as a possible world-record typical, bought and sold by serious antler collectors, and eventually hidden away from public view. The strange part is how little anyone can prove today. The rack was never officially panel-scored as a world record, the owner disappeared from the story, and later questions about possible antler alteration made the mystery even harder to settle. Let’s dive in. The Buck 𐂂 Minnesota whitetail · Record-book mystery · Trophy scoring · August 30, 2026 31" SPREAD 7" BASES \~211 UNOFFICIAL Ahrens was 29 when he shot the buck with a .300 Savage along a clover field next to a swamp. According to the account, the shot came a few days before Minnesota’s 1956 firearms season opened, which immediately clouds any record-book claim. The deer was so big that he and his brother could not move it whole, so they quartered the animal, hauled out the meat, and left the antlers in the swamp before Ahrens later went back for them. The mount spent more than 12 years above the men’s room door at the Palmer House Hotel, then moved to a resort before taxidermist Alex Martin remounted it. Martin remembered an outside spread of 31 inches and bases around 7 inches in circumference. Even then, nobody bothered to put an official score on it. Collector Charles Arnold eventually bought the Ahrens rack for $8,100\. Around the same time, Arnold was quietly showing photos of a mystery Minnesota whitetail he said measured about 211 Boone and Crockett points unofficially. He later denied that the Ahrens head and the 211-inch mystery rack were the same deer, while others believed the details matched too closely to be coincidence. The rack was later reportedly sold for somewhere between $30,000 and $50,000 and disappeared from public view. Outdoor Life also notes that photos later surfaced suggesting two abnormal points had been removed, adding another problem to an already unsettled story. 𐂂 Field Fact A green score is not an official Boone and Crockett score. Official whitetail measurements cannot be taken until the antlers have air-dried at room temperature for at least 60 days, and record-book entry requires an Official Measurer. The Ahrens story is a reminder that a giant rack can outlive the details around it. If a buck might matter to you, your family, or a record book someday, protect the story as carefully as the antlers. 𐂂 Document the harvest while the details are fresh. Take clean field photos, keep your tag and harvest information together, and write down the date, location, circumstances, and anyone who witnessed the recovery. Memory gets fuzzy. Records do not. 𐂂 Leave the rack alone. Boone and Crockett rules make trophies deliberately altered for a scoring advantage ineligible, including removing abnormal points from a typical rack. Do not trim, reshape, spread, or otherwise improve what the deer grew. 𐂂 Treat a green score as a first look. If the number is close to record-book territory, let the antlers dry for the required 60 days and contact an Official Measurer. The reported timing of the harvest, the missing rack, the disputed 211-inch estimate, and later questions about altered points all keep the claim from being clean. A giant buck does not need a record-book entry to matter, but if you want the record to mean something, the harvest has to be legal, the rack has to stay intact, and the documentation has to stand on its own. Keep the antlers the way the deer grew them. Keep the details straight. Then let an official score be what it is.
